
GENERAL RULES
1. The race will be run on the following categories: Male Age-Group: 18 to 24, 25 to 29, 30 to 34, 35 to 39, 40 to 44, 45 to 49, 50 to 54, 55 to 59, 60 to 64, 65 to 69 and 70 or older. Female Age-Group: 18 to 24, 25 to 29, 30 to 34, 35 to 39, 40 to 44, 45 to 49, 50 to 54, 55 to 59, 60 to 64, 65 to 69 and 70 or older; Male Professional; Female Professional.
2. The minimum age for participation is 18 years old. As regards these rules, the reference date for the contestant's age is the day of the race, May 31th, 2009.
3. Registrations limit: 1.450 athletes.
4. The athlete who, in the period from June 2008 to May 2009, competed as a professional/elite in ½ Ironman and Ironman events, or similar events with the same distance, anywhere in the world, will only be able to participate in Ironman Brasil 2009 in the Elite category.
5. The value of the registrations is US$500,00.
6. The entry deadline for Ironman Brazil 2009 is May 1st 2009 or when it achieves the technical limits of 1.450 athletes. The entry fee includes a ticket to the carbo loading dinner and the awards lunch party.
7. Athletes withdrawing on or before April 30th, 2009 will receive a refund of half the registration fee. After April 30th, 2009, there will be no refunds.
8. It is not possible to transfer the registration to other people or to forthcoming Ironman Brasil races.

10. Incomplete application forms can be canceled.
11. When applying for the competition the athlete will receive by email a medical record form which should be filled and sent to the organization, and should be aware of the Regulations, Standards and Procedures and the Event’s Program.
12. The competition kit will be delivered on 05/28/2009 from 9 A.M. to 6 P.M., on 05/29/2009 from 9 A.M. to 6 P.M., and on the 05/30/2009 from 8 A.M. to 11 A.M., at Doze de Agosto Club. The athlete who doesn`t get the competition kit on these days and schedules, will be disqualified and will lose the rights over it.
13. To get the competition kit, its obligatory to show the ID or passaport, and sign the medical record.
14. The athlete who gives his/her race kit to someone else, as well as the athlete who receives it, will be suspended for one year from any Ironman race organized by Latin Sports.
15. IRONMAN BRASIL will qualify 50 athletes to the 2009 IRONMAN - HAWAII race amongst racers in the Male and Female age-group and Male and Female Professional categories. Slots distribution will be proportional to the number of registrations in each category. The slot distribution will be revelead 20 days before the event (WTC orders).
16. Cryteria of slots distribution for HAWAII IRONMAN (determination of the WTC): All pre qualified, to have right on the slots has to be present day 06/01, at 9 A.M. at Doze de Agosto Club, with the registration fee in dollar, in case that it is not present to the called being or it does not have the amount in dollar, the athlete will lose the slot, and the next athlete will be called and thus successively. In case that it remains a slot of a determinate gender, the slot will be redirected to the category which has the most number of athletes. The entry fee for the 2009 Ironman Triathlon World Championship will be U$500.00, plus the $10.00 USAT one day membership fee.
17. Every athlete registered at the race will be "insured" from the swim start until the end of his/her participation on the event. The Organization is not responsible for any problems the athlete may have before or after the race.
18. The organization will cover the amount of R$3.000,00 (three thousand reais) related to the expenses with doctor and hospital. Expenses exceeding this amount will be under the athletes responsibility. In case of disability or death, the Organization, by means of the insurance company, will pay thirty thousand Brazilian reais (R$ 30,000.00).
19. Its obligatory the bike check-in, at the entrance of the transition area on June 1st - from 1 P.M. to 8 P.M.
20. The bike check-out will be based on the time limit for Bike, on 05/25, until 05/26 at 12:30 A.M., with the delivery of the ankle tag chip. If by any reason the athlete is not able to do it, he/she will appoint someone, through an appropriate document from the race-kit and with this, the anklet and the chip in hands he/she will be able to make the withdrawal. The failure to return the ankle tag chip transfers the procedure to the following morning, in the Lost and Found Section, after paying the amount of one hundred Brazilian reais (R$ 100.00) at the Administrative Section as a refund to the Organization for the lost equipment.
21. Bike and Run gear bags must be delivered by the athletes on Saturday, 05/30, at the Change Tent, from 1:00 PM to 8:00 PM. The Bike and Running special needs bags, which are optional, may be delivered by the athletes to the Organization’s staff on the day of the event, from 4:30 A.M. to 6:45 A.M, in the Transition Area. The athlete has the option of having a personal assistant take care of the special needs bag.
22. During the event, the athletes will receive the Bike and Running special needs bags halfway through the corresponding course. Each delivery location will have two assigned areas: one for the bags under the responsibility of the Organization’s staff and another for the athlete’s “personal assistant”. If the procedure takes place elsewhere, it will be considered as “external help”, in which case the beneficiary will be eliminated.
23. After the event, the Bike special needs bags which had been delivered by the athletes to the Organization’s staff and which were not picked up by them in the respective area will be forwarded to the Exchange Tent and may be picked up at the check-out.
24. The Running special needs bag that had been delivered by the athletes to the Organization’s staff and which were not picked up in the corresponding area will be forwarded to the Lost and Found sector.
25. The Organization is not responsible for athletes' belongings lost inside or outside the Transition area; it will, however, keep a room for the "lost and found" items.
26. The Lost and Found sector will be open for delivery of material on 6/01 from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM. After this period, the material that has not been picked up will be forwarded to charity entities.
27. The athlete will have, from the moment of the start, up to 02:30 h to complete the Swimming section, up to 10:40 h to complete the Bike section and 17:00 hours to complete the Running section. The athlete who exceeds the cutoff time for any of these courses will be disqualified, being unable to proceed in the race. After the time limit for each type of sport, the security facilities for each section will be dismantled.
28. The athlete who does not strictly conform to the course for each section will be eliminated.
29. Upon returning from the Swim (beach), Bike and Marathon courses, there will be an electronic passage control.
30. There'll be 1 drinking station at Swimming, 11 drinking and feeding stations at Cycling and 18 at Running.
31. The athlete must dress up at the Change Tent; in case he/she does not do it, he/she will be penalized with 5 minutes to the total time; relapsers will be disqualified.
32. Each athlete is responsible to remove and place one’s own material in the specific bags at the Exchange Tent.
33. The use of the ankle tag chip provided by the Organization is mandatory for all contestants during the whole race.
34. At the day oh the race, Sunday, the transition area will be opened at 4:30 AM and will be closed at 6:45 AM.
35. Any physical or moral offence from a contestant towards any member of the Organization will be penalized with disqualification, and the offender may be suspended from any IRONMAN event promoted by Latin Sports.
36. The medical care service will be able to remove from the race the athlete who is unable to continue, according to medical criteria.
37. Every contestant who finishes the whole race will receive a medal. The top three finishers in each category will receive a trophy and the top ten finishers in the Professional category, both sexs, will receive a cash award.
38. The athlete has to be present or indicate someone to represent him/her at the awarding date; otherwise he/she will not be entitled to the award.
39. The organization has the power of taking any decision concerning the rules.
40. Any doubts arising from application or interpretation of race-specific Technical Rules will be analyzed by the Race's Referees.
Swimming (3.8 Km)
1. The event will have one single start, and the elite category athletes of both sexes will be placed in front of the athletes of the other categories. The course will be done in two 1.9-km loops around an equilateral triangle.
2. The athlete must have his/her number marked on his/her body by an Organization member. The body marking will be done next to the Transition area on the day of the race, Sunday, from 4:30 AM to 6:45 AM.
3. The athlete must go around the buoys. The athlete, who doesnt do it, will be disqualified.
4. The athletes are obliged to wear the swimming cap given by the organization. The athlete, who doesn’t wear it, will be disqualified.
5. Its forbidden to use any kind of auxiliary equipment to swim. The athlete who does it, will be disqualified (except goggles and weatsuit clothes).
6. The use of a wetsuit permitted to the athlete of age group. The professional athlete can only compete wearing a wetsuit at water temperature bellow 22ºC. The Event’s Direction will measure the water temperature on the days of the Technical Congress, as an alert, informing same of the measurement and, one and a half hour before the start, a new measurement will be taken, which result will be announced on the sound system, to determine whether the use is permitted or not.
7. If an professional athlete use rubber outfit (wetsuit) without the event´s direction permission, he or she will be disqualified.
8. Its forbidden to run on the beach, except in a specific area delimited by the organization. The athlete who doesnt obey it, will be disqualified
9. The athletes are obliged to get out of the water 10 minutes before the competition starts. The athlete who doesn`t do it, will be disqualified.
Cycling (180 km. 2 laps of 90 km)
1. The contestant must always wear a fastened helmet when in contact with his/her bike. In case the athlete doenst do this, he'll be disqualified.
2. It's mandatory the use of a T-Shirt for the men
3. The race number must be visible on the bike and on the athlete's back; it shall not be altered from its original format. Failure to meet this rule will result in a yellow card penalty.
4. The athlete has to push his/her bicycle until the mounting lane and to get off the bicycle before the unmounting lane. In case he/she fails to do it, he/she will be penalized with 5 minutes to the total time.
5. It's prohibited the draft, the amateur and professional athletes have to maintain a minimum distance of 10 meters from the athete before them. If the athlete does not obey he'll be given a yellow card.
6. The professional and amateur athlete will have 20 seconds to overtake.If the athlete does not obey he'll be given a yellow card.
7. Passing is determined when the athlete puts his front wheel side by side to the rear wheel of the athlete being overtaken. The athlete being overtaken will not be able to react until the passing is completed and he/she is out of the drafting zone of the passing cyclist. If the athlete being overtaken fails to observe this rule he/she will receive a yellow card.
8. The athlete who receives two yellow cards or 1 red card will be disqualified, being unable to continue the race.
9. When the athlete receives the yellow card penalty, he/she is forced to stop for the Referee to mark a slash across his/her race number (back). The stop place for the procedure will be determined by the Referee, who will always consider safety issues. The athlete who does not stop will receive a red card.
10. The athlete who receives a yellow card penalty in the Bike course has to do his/her penalty in the specific area. In case he/she fails to follow this rule, he/she will be disqualified.
11. At the Penalty Area the athlete is only allowed to drink water and go to the toilet; in case he/she needs medical attention, permission from the Area's Referee is required. In case the athlete does not observe this rule, he/she will be disqualified.
Running (42km)
1. The race number must be placed in the frontal part of the athlete's body, clearly visible and unaltered in any way. In case it is not, the athlete will receive a yellow card and will have 5 minutes added to his/her final time. In the relapse case, the athlete will be with the red card and will be declassified.
2. Individual non-participant escort runners or cyclists are prohibited. If a Referee identifies such an event, the athlete will receive a yellow card and will have 5 minutes added to his/her final time. The athlete who repeats the transgression once again, will be penalized with the red card and be disqualified.
3. Male participants must wear t-shirts. In case a male athlete does not wear one or if the t-shirt is rolled up, he will receive a yellow card and will have 5 minutes added to his final time. The athlete who remains without T-shirt, will be disqualified.
4. Upon receiving a yellow card penalty, the athlete is forced to stop for the Referee to mark a slash across his/her race number.
5. The athlete who receives two yellow cards or 1 red card will be disqualified, being unable to continue the race.
